Monitoring and supporting the development of regional democracy in different countries of Europe
In 2010 AER will celebrate its 25th anniversary. The Standing Committee will use this important year to celebrate its own declaration on regionalism, to provide an overview of the state of play of regional democracy in Europe and to discuss the perspectives and future of regions in a united Europe. Among others the Standing Committee will organise several regionalism caravans on decentralisation and regional competences and update its regionalism report.
-
Ensuring that European governance mechanisms provide the optimal framework conditions for regional democracy in Europe
Currently a new European governance cycle is getting started seeing a new European Commission and a new European Parliament in place and the most likely adoption of a new working structure provided by the Lisbon Treaty. The Standing Committee will monitor the new institutional set up and make sure that regional concerns are taken into consideration.
-
Communicating Europe
The lack of participation of European citizens to the European elections has shown that European integration is still a process far away from the citizens. Since Europe is more and more affecting our daily life, the Standing Committee will continue to provide its decentralised communication activities about European affairs
-
Institutional capacity building - AER Training Academy
The Standing Committee will continue to provide members with know-how on European institutions and regional lobbying mechanisms as well as on specific European policies or financial instruments. For 2010 the Standing Committee will organise several Training Academies.
Main objectives
- To promote the principle of subsidiarity and the development of regional democracy throughout Europe
- To ensure that institutional developments within the European framework reflect the needs of the regional level
- To facilitate an exchange of experience and best practice between regions on regional democracy and subsidiarity
