Between 4 and 7 June 2009 European citizens are asked to elect for the 7th time in 30 years their representatives in the European Parliament.
What is at stake? How do European deputies respond to the economic crisis?
How do they see the future of Europe? Which role do European politicians assign to the regions in the European integration process?
In order to find out, the AER organised a political debate with the leaders of the European Parliament groups.
On the question how much the Lisbon treaty actually does for the regions: "Lisbon doesn’t do much, but it does do something. The treaty can pave the way for the regions to take steps forward again."
"Regions must be considered partners on national and European level," said Jan Olbrycht.
"It will be a catastrophe if the Lisbon Treaty is not ratified, since it is not only important for the 27 EU member states but also for the integration of other states, for example, of the former Yugoslavia," said Gisela Kallenbach.
Hannes Swoboda emphasised that "regions must be supported by national governments and the EU, and be given real incentives for new projects to restructure their economies in way that will create jobs and a greener economy.”
