Invitation to President Sabban to join the Climate Week Opening Ceremony in New York City on 21 September 2009

2nd September 2009

Dear Ms Michèle Sabban,

Climate Week NY°C Opening Ceremony: INVITATION

This letter is to invite you to attend the Opening Ceremonies of Climate Week NYC to take place the afternoon of September 21st, 2009. The Climate Group, together with UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, the City of New York and the Carbon Disclosure Project announced “Climate Week NYC” that will be held from Sept. 21st to Sept 25th at, and adjacent to, the UN Headquarters in New York. The week will be devoted to securing an ambitious climate change agreement just seventy days later in Copenhagen. The goal of Climate Week is to demonstrate that, with a combination of low carbon solutions and actions already underway by state, municipal and corporate leaders, implementation of a Global Deal is well within our reach.

The UN Secretary General specifically announced that, on September 22nd, he is convening a special session of the General Assembly for day long talks on securing a climate change agreement in Copenhagen. The one hour Opening Ceremonies on September 21st, hosted by former Prime Minister Tony Blair and The Climate Group, will launch this important session and week‐long series of events. During the ceremonies there will be brief presentations by some of our corporate and government partners. It is expected that one of our Subnational government partners will hand over the attached statement to the UN Secretary General. As you may know, through distribution of this Statement to regions around the world, The Climate Group has worked with regions around the world to secure recognition of Subnational climate action within the Long Term Cooperative Agreement. As you may also know, the Climate Group with a number of leading Regions are developing an important partnership with UNDP and UNEP in implementing a territorial approach to climate change aiming at reinforcing the regions from developing countries to charting a New Low‐Carbon Route to development for which UNDP will launch, on September 24th in New York a book as a Primer on integrated climate change planning for regional governments.

As such, we would welcome your presence during the handing over of the Statement to the UN Secretary General. In addition there are many other events taking place throughout the week that may be of interest to you. These can be found at www.climateweeknyc.org. For further information on Climate Week, please do not hesitate to contact alucas@theclimategroup.org.

Thank you in advance and we very much hope to see you on September 21st.

Yours sincerely,
Steve Howard CEO
