Regional strategies for economic development

AER is committed to bring support to the Regions in their economic development strategies, via the organisation of all kinds of activities in a wide range of topics.

The aim of the AER is notably to :

  • Develop the role of the regions in giving Europe a competitive advantage in the global economy,
  • Foster and disseminate innovative approaches to regional economic development and job creation
  • Promote sustainable labour force mobility throughout Europe
  • Ensure that the European Union provides adequate framework conditions and support programmes for regional innovation, research and competitiveness

The main AER projects in this field are:

  • ETAP Community: AER has joined the ETAP Community. The European Technology Action Plan was adopted in January 2004 to help enhance innovation, growth and sustainable development in Europe. The ambitious Action Plan is intended to boost development and use of environment technologies to improve European comptetitiveness in this area, and enable the EU to become the recognised world leader. The Action Plan is part of the Lisbon Strategy. For furhter information, click here.
  • Innovation award: for the third consecutive year, AER is looking to reward and recognise the European region which have developped particularly innovative projects or policies. For more information, please click here
  • Peer reviews: One-week visits by multinational teams of regional officers and politicians to a host region which is interested in improving its economic development policies. Based on the findings made during the visit, the review team prepares a report with a series of policy recommendations for the host region. Further information about the pilot projects and the toolkit can be requested to Celine DAWANS, Policy Coordinator (+32 (0) 2 421 83 89)
  • BAK Basel: Pilot study on decentralisation indicators. The objective is to collect data and retrieve information and to convert it into indicators that reflect the autonomy of regions across European countries and their ability to shape their own economic development policies. Download the project outline here.

Eco-friendly technologies are good for business, reduce pressure on the environment, and can create new jobs. The European Commission invites all stakeholders and the public to discover and share promising opportunities to make eco-innovation an everyday reality throughout Europe.

Main events
  • ARC conference on quality of life in airport regions, Amsterdam, 3-4 December 2009

The Airport Regions Conference (ARC) and the Province of Noord-Holland cordially invite you to join the conference and exhibition entitled "Quality of life in airport regions". The venue for our international conference is the world famous five-star Krasnapolsky Hotel located in the very heart of Amsterdam overlooking Dam Square.

ARC is an association of cities and regions across Europe with an international airport situated in or close to its boundaries. Today there are more than 30 cities and regions in ARC. They include “the big five” international hub airports of Heathrow, Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt, Madrid and Amsterdam, along with other major international and regional airports in 19 European countries, representing about 100 million citizens. ARC brings together a wide range of expertise at the interface of air transport as well as local and regional policies. A common concern is balancing the economic benefits generated by airports against their environmental impact, notably the effect on the quality of life of local residents. ARC works together with all stakeholders in the aviation industry and also co-operates with the European Commission and the EC Directorates for Transport, Environment and Regional Policy.
