Youth"Do you speak European?" AER competition

Do you speak European?
AER competition for youth from European regions

2nd edition 2009/2010

Launched in 2008, AER ‘Do you speak European?’ is a public speaking and personal expression contest which gives teams of young people between the ages of 14 and 18 the opportunity to prepare and present their views on the question ‘What does Europe mean to you?’

The competition is taking place across the whole of Europe on three levels – regional, national and European. Each participating region organises its own regional-level competition (Autumn 2009). Each winning from a participating region will go through to the next level of the competition – the national heat. Here, the team that you have put forward will make their presentation again, competing against the other regional winners. This will all happen in the Winter/ early Spring of 2010. Finally, the winners of each national competition will go on to compete at European level, at the Grand Final on 19 May 2010 in Brussels. The teams competing at the European Final will not only be representing their regions, but also their countries.

Do you speak European?
AER Youth in Europe Competition
2008

The Assembly of European Regions (AER) organised an exciting new competition, which gives young people the opportunity to explore for themselves what it means to be a part of Europe. ‘Do You Speak European?’ is a public speaking and personal expression contest which gives teams of young people between the ages of 14 and 18 the opportunity to prepare and present their views on the question: ‘What does Europe mean to you?".

The competition took place all across Europe on three levels: regional, national and European. Each participating region (37 regions from across Europe) organised its own regional-level competition. The winners of each regional competition went on to represent their region at national level. Finally, the winners of each national competition competed at the European level, at a grand final held in Brussels on 3rd December 2008.

European Final of the Competition

AER together with Brussels Capital Region organised the European final that took place on 3rd December in Brussels. At the same day of the competition, Brussels Capital Region held the European event “What can Europe do for you(th)?”, an information day about: jobs, education, culture, travels and languages. There were almost 600 young persons coming from different European regions and countries and from Brussels: students, young jobseekers, and active young people. The event also drew the attention of other regional offices based in Brussels.

11 winners of the national level competitions from across Europe arrived to Brussels to compete at European level. The rules of the European final were similar to the rules of the regional and national competition. That means:

• Teams of young people compete against each other to present their views of Europe in an original and informative way.

• All participants must be between the ages of 14 and 18 and they should be a maximum of 5 young people per team.

• Each team prepares a 5-7 minute presentation, which addresses the question: “What does Europe mean to you?” The presentations can be made in any format.

• At the end the jury decides on a winning team.

The winning team appeared in the European media and was awarded a prize from the AER and Brussels Capital Region.
