In these times of political and budgetary uncertainty in Europe, After the failed attempt by the Mid-June European Council to agree on a budget for 2007-2013, the fate of rural areas is more than ever at stake. It depends on both the pending decisions relating to the CAP Second pillar and international trade negotiations.
How can the weakest rural areas unlock their potential and create growth and employment on the basis of their own assets, without depending directly from a more and more uncertain European budget?
This Conference which took place in England during the British EU Presidency allowed the participants to review the recent development of community policies aimes at suppporting rural areas, exchange on difficulties, opportunities, achievements and perspectives for all rural stakeholders.
The economic, social and environmental aspects were discussed by all rural actors, from the highest community level to grassroots actors, in order to share experiences and remain mobilised in favour of a more sustainable and harmonious development scheme in Europe.
