What challenges and opportunities for electric cars?

Studies forecast that by 2020 the drive of every fourth new cars will include an electric component and in 50 years most cars will be powered by electricity.  The European targets regarding CO2 reduction and energy efficiency but also increasing costumer demand for an environment-friendly transport require new mobility concepts. Strategies for sustainable mobility are thus key for Europe’s economic growth. Although it is unclear how the various technical solutions will develop, the move toward e-mobility will have a major influence on the automotive value chain, with electronic components replacing those of the combustion engine.

These developments will have a major impact on both the automotive industry and political decision makers. With a pro-active approach regions can master the structural change, stay competitive and contribute toward the European energy objectives. Regional activity may include demand side measures, such as consumer acceptance, as well as the support of infrastructure, research, education and training.

The AER study visit on E-Mobility allowed participants to learn more about current trends and gain first hand experience from a car manufacturer, a representative of a regional e-mobility agency and the European Commission. The meeting helped political decision makers and officers build up their knowledge on e-mobility, to share their own experience and to learn from other regions.
