Regional Preparedness for Floods

The aim of this meeting was to help regions develop and improve their plans for preventing and responding to floods. Regions were able to learn from each other’s experience what issues they should consider when developing their plans and what the most successful policies are.

Different issues were discussed:

• Causation - what factors contribute to floods and how can they be controlled to prevent floods?
• Prevention: spatial planning, land use and the impact of agriculture,
• Planning: how should regions prepare for floods? Risk mapping, inventories of available resources, risk assessment  
• Response: which actors are involved? Who does what? How do you coordinate activities?
• Cleaning up: housing dislocated populations, re-establishing transport and communications infrastructure, responding to the environmental impact.
• Insurance: who pays for what, how do you collect and store information about the damage?
