European regions and cities increasingly face problems caused by transport and traffic. The question of how to enhance mobility while at the same time reducing congestion, accidents and pollution is a common challenge to all major regions and cities in Europe.

On the other hand, mobility in urban and rural areas is an important facilitator for growth and employment and for sustainable development.

Creating the right framework for combined mobility is an important element in ensuring that mobility in general continues to develop in a sustainable way. Combined mobility cannot work without functioning chains of mobility. The points at which the different modes of transport intersect are of central importance. If the framework conditions for combined mobility are to be improved, transport and spatial development must be coordinated and all stakeholders must be included in the process.

Efficient and effective transport can significantly contribute to achieving objectives in a wide range of policy domains, such as socio-economic objectives, energy dependency, or climate change. It partly depends on actions taken by national, regional and local authorities.

In debates, workshops and study visits, the AER Summer Schools 2010 will not only enable adults and young people to learn more about new transport concepts and to exchange best practice in the fields of urban, rural and interregional traffic but also to explore its limits and possible constraints.
