AER Survey on regional energy policy
Diversifying our energy landscape, actively searching for a new energy security paradigm... as you see, there are still many cooperation opportunities in the area of energy waiting to be untapped! Sounds far-fetched? Well, coal and oil might be able to keep us warm for the next few decades; but it is fairly clear that we need to do something about the issue of energy now and not in fifty years when it start to cause real problems. The attached AER questionnaire aims to explore how regional authorities deal with energy matters. What kind of political and economic incentives do you use to harness new sources of energy in order to bridge the increasing gap between energy demand and supply? What prerequisites are needed for the development of effective regional energy strategies that would accurately depict rapidly changing energy trends? The outcomes of the questionnaire will be used to build up further AER projects in the field of energy. As our energy peer reviews enjoy growing popularity, we would like to appropriately respond to increasing demand for green European projects, and identify areas where we should concentrate our efforts. This being said, we kindly ask you to fill-in our survey with rigor and precision, and specify your expectations towards future AER energy-related activities. As the result of the questionnaire will be outlined at AER General Assembly in Belfort, we would be grateful if you could return your contribution to j.podralska@aer.eu by 30 October 2009. Declaration of European Regions for Energy efficiency and Renewable Energy sources
This declaration is a joint initiative by FEDARENE and the AER. It is a crucial tool used to implement the above-mentioned Strategy and Action Plan. The AER encourages its members to sign the declaration. Please contact the AER secretariat if your Region would like to contribute to this joint effort.

More than 80 European regions have signed the Declaration “European Regions for Energy efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources”, initiated by the AER in 2006.
In the wake of this declaration 11 EU regions, Flevoland (NL, lead partner), Abruzzo (IT), Gabrovo (BG), Lazio (IT), Maramures (RO), Norrbotten (SE), Noord-Brabant (NL), Prahova (RO), Västernorrland (SE), Valencia (ES) and Western Greece, joined forces with the AER in this project.
MORE4NRG addresses energy issues at interregional level, combining the identification, analysis and processing of best practices in RES and energy efficiency for the benefit of all partners with specific support to the partner regions with less developed sustainable energy strategies.
The project's methodology builds upon AER’s highly successful peer review programme.

AER energy peer review in Republika Srpska
From 21 to 24 July 2009, experts from AER member regions conducted an energy audit in the region of Republika Srpska (BiH), with the aim of assessing the region’s potential to produce electrical and thermal power from biomass resources, including wood, agricultural and municipal solid waste. Through a series of meetings with energy stakeholders, namely market regulators, private investors and government officials, the peer review team tried to identify factors that may hamper the development of biomass-based energy production in the Republika Srpska. Financially supported by the Central European Initiative’s Know-How Exchange Program, the initiative was based on AER’s per review methodology, established in 2006. The findings of the AER energy peer review were unveiled at a debriefing in Brussels on October 7th, and are now available for download :

The AER publishes a newsletter on Energy on a monthly or bi-monthly basis, depending on the information available.
The newsletter on Energy contains both AER news in the field of Energy as information about activities, events and legislation on a European level. The AER very much encourages its members to contribute to the newsletter, so feel free to contact the AER Committee 1 Secretariat and submit your contributions!

Directive on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (23/01/2008)
The Commission published in January 2008 a first proposal of the Directive on the promotion of energy from renewable sources. Currently under reading in the Parliament, the directive is expected to be adopted in the mid 2009 and to come into effect in the course of 2010.
The working group is the main body supporting the implementation of the AER energy action plan.
