Social Affairs & European Regions

Regions today are faced with a number of challenges that have a significant impact on their societies: demographic changes; the impact of the European internal market rules on health and social systems; the economic and social impact of globalisation; increasingly diverse societies and citizens' diverse needs. Regions need to understand these new realities and to develop policies that respond to their citizens' changing needs.

Copyright Alex E. Proimos

Each Year since 1983, the EU has been implementing an awareness campaign in order to draw the attention of Citizens & Governments at every level on a specific topic. Objectives of the EY are defined by European Institutions in cooperation with civil society, governments, etc.

2010 will be the European dedicated to combating poverty and social exclusion.

The European Year 2010 aims to:

  • Recognise the rights and capacity of excluded people to play an active part in society;
  • Underline the responsibility of everyone in society to tackle poverty;
  • Promote social cohesion and disseminate successful practices on inclusion;
  • Reinforce the commitment of all major political players to take more effective actions.

Regions interested in organising events for their citizens can benefit from EU co-funding. The AER Secretariat has prepared a note on this, please log in to access this information.

The future of the European Social Model

Europe is grounded in diversity and the regions are an excellent illustration of this. However, the AER member regions acknowledged the existence of a European Social Model, which is grounded in fundamental principles common to all.To read more about this, please click below to download the AER Declaration and the AER Glossary on the European Social Model.
